Tight, Grumpy Autumn Skin? Put the Kettle On

There comes a point in autumn when the weather just turns. We step out into the freezing, biting wind, then come straight back indoors to the dry heat of the radiators. You might have noticed your skin reacting to this, and there is a very good reason why. It is not just the cold wind or the central heating alone; it is the sudden, harsh swing between the two that really shocks the skin. Going from freezing temperatures straight into a hot room plays havoc with our circulation and strips our natural moisture, leaving mature skin feeling tight, parched, and a bit grumpy.
I have a confession to make. Even as someone who formulates skincare for a living, I can be the absolute worst at sticking to a strict routine. Life gets busy, and some nights I just want to get straight to bed. But when the seasons change and my skin is really playing up, I have a favourite trick I always use. It is incredibly simple, needs no special equipment, and turns a normal evening into a lovely, comforting ritual.
When my face feels completely baked from the indoor heating and battered by the wind, I treat myself to a traditional facial steam. All you need is a bowl of hot water and a soft towel over your head. Taking just a few minutes to breathe and let the steam work does wonders. It softens the skin, gets the circulation going, and brings a bit of a glow back to a tired complexion.
The other thing I always do is drop in some of my favourite essential oils. This is where you get a wonderful double benefit. Because the steam opens your pores, the oils can really penetrate the skin, but you also breathe them in, making the whole thing incredibly calming.
For the skin, oils like lavender or frankincense are gorgeous. My personal favourite is geranium. I love it so much that I will often make a full custom blend using geranium, lavender, and clary sage. Or, if you are fighting off an autumn cold, a couple of drops of eucalyptus or peppermint will still treat your skin beautifully while working wonders for your sinuses.
The most vital step comes right at the end. While your face is still slightly damp and warm from the steam, it is perfectly primed to absorb moisture. This is when I take a generous scoop of my favourite cream—which is obviously one of my own!—or whatever your absolute favourite is, and gently massage it in. The warmth helps it melt seamlessly into the skin, locking in hydration and giving you a lovely barrier against the dry indoor air.
You do not need a complicated, exhausting routine to protect your skin this season. Sometimes, taking five minutes for a bowl of warm water, your favourite oils, and a beautiful cream is all you need to give yourself a mini facial at home.
