Why I Refuse To Make An SPF Moisturiser (Even Though It Costs Me Customers)
Share
Hey everyone, Heather here. Let's talk about another one of my skincare bugbears.
We all love a quick fix in the morning, and the beauty industry knows this perfectly well. They sell you a daily moisturiser with "SPF 30" slapped across the front, and you feel brilliant because you’ve sorted your routine in record time. Job done, right?
Years ago, I completely bought into that promise myself. Being fair-skinned with freckles, the type who turns red if I so much as look at a photo of the sun, I learned the hard way that these two-in-one creams simply were not cutting it. I was still burning. I quickly realised that even with an SPF moisturiser, I had to apply a standalone sunscreen anyway. There was simply no getting away without doing it.
While my skin happens to be particularly sensitive, the reality is that every woman over 50 needs that exact same level of dedicated protection.
Having a professional qualification specifically in skincare over 50 means I spend a lot of time analysing ingredients. I look at exactly how these hybrid formulas interact with mature skin, and the reality behind the marketing promises is incredibly frustrating.
I am going to let you in on a massive industry secret straight from my formulation room. When I started developing the Balanced Botanics skincare line, I set one unbreakable rule: absolutely zero SPF mixed into the moisturisers.
To be completely upfront, sticking to my guns on this has cost me customers in the past. People desperately want that two-in-one magic potion. When they realise I refuse to make one, some walk away. I am entirely fine with that, simply because I refuse to compromise our skin's health just to tick a convenient box.
Here is the truth about why I keep them totally separate, and why you should too.
The Two-in-One Trap
Look at the science. You are essentially asking one cream to do two completely opposite jobs at the exact same time.
A proper moisturiser is designed to sink deep into your skin. It wants to travel down layers to deliver hydration and active botanicals. Sunscreen is the exact opposite. It acts as a microscopic shield and needs to sit right on top of your face to bounce those UV rays away.
Mix them in one pot, and they end up fighting. The formula has to compromise. You end up with a moisturiser that cannot hydrate deeply, and a sunscreen that cannot protect you properly.
The Tiny Dab Illusion (And The 30-Minute Rule)
Now, let’s talk about how we actually apply these creams.
To get the SPF 30 protection promised on the bottle, you have to apply about two full finger-lengths of the product. That is a massive dollop. Let's be real. Are you actually slathering two huge streaks of your expensive daily cream onto your face? Most of us just use a tiny pea-sized drop.
The harsh reality is, if you only use a tiny dab of a Factor 30 moisturiser, you are not getting Factor 30 protection. You are likely getting something closer to a Factor 5.
Usually, I am the first to say that some is better than none. In this specific situation, my conviction is completely different. Getting just a tiny fraction of your SPF protection creates a dangerous false sense of security. You walk out the door thinking you are fully covered, leaving yourself completely vulnerable to sun damage.
Furthermore, Factor 30 may not be quite enough for some mature skin anyway. While it works for some, I always recommend stepping up to a Factor 50 to get the absolute maximum protection our skin deserves. And this is the really crucial bit: sunscreens need a good 30 minutes to activate on the skin before you step outside. Most people slap on their SPF moisturiser and walk straight out the door, leaving themselves completely unprotected during that crucial window.
Taking Back Control
Keeping these steps separate gives you total control. Your moisturiser can focus 100% on deep nourishment and nothing else. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
For sun protection, layer a dedicated, standalone sunscreen on top. Personally, I don't even bother with Factor 30. I put my Factor 50 on every single morning as an entirely separate step.
Next time you are getting ready, try this instead: apply your normal moisturiser and give it a minute to sink in and do its job. Then, seal it all in with a proper sunscreen 30 minutes before you leave the house.
Your skin gets the deep hydration it craves, plus the iron-clad protection it actually needs. No compromises required.
