Why I Refuse To Make An SPF Moisturiser (And Why It Matters For Your Customers)
Share
Hi everyone, Heather here. If you ever want to watch a skincare formulator twitch, just ask us to put an SPF into a daily moisturiser.
The beauty industry loves offering consumers a quick fix, and buyers know that a daily cream with SPF 30 slapped on the front is a very easy sell. Yet, when I started developing the Balanced Botanics skincare line, I set one unbreakable rule: absolutely zero SPF mixed into our moisturisers.
Here is why stocking these convenient hybrid creams might actually be preventing your mature clients from getting the results they really deserve.
The Formulation Clash
When we look at the science, we are essentially asking one cream to do two completely opposite jobs at the exact same time.
A proper moisturiser is designed to sink deep into the skin. It wants to travel down layers to deliver active botanicals and deep hydration. Sunscreen is the exact opposite. It acts as a microscopic shield and needs to sit right on top of the face to bounce UV rays away.
Mix them in one pot, and they end up fighting. The formula has to compromise. You end up with a moisturiser that cannot hydrate deeply and a sunscreen that cannot protect the skin properly.
The Tiny Dab Illusion
This is the part that really affects consumer trust. To get the SPF 30 protection promised on the bottle, a customer needs to apply about two full finger lengths of product.
Let's be realistic about how women actually use their premium skincare. Most people apply a tiny pea sized drop of their expensive day cream and walk outside. That means they are likely stepping out the door with essentially Factor 5 protection. When they eventually see sun damage and dehydrated skin, they blame the product, and they lose faith in the retailer who recommended it.
Building Trust Through Honest Education
As a therapist specialising in mature skin, I know this demographic values honesty and genuine advice above all else.
When you stock dedicated, uncompromised moisturisers, you build incredible trust with your clients. You are offering a product that focuses 100% on deep nourishment and does exactly what it says on the tin. Furthermore, steering clear of the two in one trap creates the perfect educational moment for your staff to recommend and cross sell a dedicated, standalone Factor 50 sunscreen.
Your customers get the deep hydration they crave and the genuine sun protection they actually need. No compromises required.
If you are a retail buyer looking to stock a brand that prioritises real results and formulation integrity over industry shortcuts, I would love to connect.
